About Me

I am a global expert on immigration control and a widely-published writer. I hold a PhD from the University of Oxford, where I studied as a Commonwealth Scholar. I have also served as the Bora Laskin National Fellow in Human Rights Research, and a postdoctoral fellow at the Nathanson Centre at Osgoode Hall, and at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs in the University of Ottawa. For six years, I was on faculty at the Ethics, Society, and Law Program at Trinity College in the University of Toronto.

With over fifteen years in policy and academic circles, I can advise on humanities- and social science-based research and writing. I am currently a research associate at the Centre for Refugee Studies and co-lead the Thinking Forward Network, a feminist human rights consultancy firm. I also organize with frontline workers through the grassroots Rights of NonStatus Women Network in Toronto.

I am an expert in university admissions letters. I can assist you to better communicate in your personal letters to admissions committees at law schools, postgraduate programs, and undergraduate programs.

The Detention Estate

The Detention Estate will offer a new explanatory and analytic theory for the rapid rise, expansion, and normalization of immigration detention. Taking Canada as a case study, this intersectional and interdisciplinary book makes sense of the ascension into normalcy of the wholly abnormal laws and policies governing the indefinite incarcerations of thousands of people due to their immigration statuses. The Detention Estate also puts forward the new ideas of detainable subject, and detention nation.
